About Freeclimber: LEMUR 3
FreeClimber: LEMUR 3 belongs to a new generation of robots being built at JPL that can crawl, walk and even climb rock walls. This robot was designed to operate in extreme terrains, demonstrating the applicability of its systems for possible missions to Mars, the Moon, and small bodies. It was developed under sponsorship of NASA Science Mission Directorate.
Nimble Limbs
The robot has four limbs, each with seven degrees of freedom.
Velcro-like Grip
The robot uses microspine grippers, which employ thousands of sharp hooks that grip rough surface areas.
3D Awareness
This robot features seven sets of stereo cameras for seeing and four limbs for maneuvering and manipulation. RoboSimian also features a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) device for mapping its environment in 3-D.
