Randy joined the Air Force in 1976. After a successful 27.5 year Air Force career, he retired in the rank of Colonel in March 2004. Randy was selected as a DoD Manned Spaceflight Engineer in 1983; one of 14 selected from 218 applicants DoD-wide. In 1985, he was also selected as a DoD Payload Specialist (astronaut) and Space Shuttle Crewmember for the STS-62A mission. In his last Air Force assignment, Randy served as the System Program Director, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, CA.
After retiring from the Air Force, Randy joined the team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in late March 2004. In his current role as Manager, National Defense and Military Program Office, he manages and coordinates JPL’s DoD-related projects/programs portfolio with a variety of sponsors within the Office of the Secretary of Defense and each of the military services, including the Space Force.
Randy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lamar University in 1973 and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering form Louisiana Tech University in 1976. He also graduated from the Air Force’s Squadron Office School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.
Randy is married to Jo Ann Price Odle and they live in Glendale, CA.
