The target area for Surveyor A is a circle 62 miles in diameter in Oceanus Procellarium. The center of the circle is 3 degrees South latitude, 44 degrees West longitude. The area is a potential landing site for Apollo.
The target circle includes Flamsteed Crater, 12 miles in diameter, one mile deep and with a rim rising about 1,800 feet above the lunar surface. Two lesser craters, known as Flamsteed D and Flamsteed E lie three miles northeast, respectively, of big Flamsteed. Otherwise, the terrain is relatively flat.
The Soviet Union's Luna 9 landed in the Oceanus Procellarium, also known as the Sea of Storms, about 600 miles northwest of Surveyor's target area.
